The history of the ‘Langestraat’

After the long war with Spain during the 16th Century, Amsterdam experienced the largest economic boom ever seen in the World. In order to cope with the surge of new inhabitants, the city of Amsterdam expanded to the west by building the ‘Keizersgracht’, ‘Prinsengracht’, and now the most popular visited area known as the ‘Jordaan’. The ‘Langestraat’ exists between the former city walls and the newly created canals – the ‘Herengracht’, ‘Browersgracht’ and ‘Singel’.

Around 1595, the ’Langestraat’, which means ‘The Longest Street’, was constructed, and was actually the only true street in the city. What today are considered streets were in the late 16th Century in fact dikes and canals. Dikes were a form of dams and played a critical role in protecting the town from the sea’s tides and flooding. Canals were not considered “streets” and were used primarily for commercial barge traffic.

Many merchants owned buildings on Langestraat with storefronts on the ground floor for their businesses with family living above. homes (they often lived on the upper floors). Nowadays it is reminder of a typical small street of old Amsterdam. Walking down the street you can still imagine that you are back in the 17th century known as the Golden Age of Amsterdam.

Peter Boogaard and Tomasz

About Us.

Peter  (photo on the right)

Born to Dutch parents, Peter has had the good fortune to have travelled and lived around the world. He came back to his roots shortly after 9/11 and has made Amsterdam his home. His residence in a 16th century building he shares with his spouse Tomasz, and their two loving Jack Russell's (Pepe and Curly). The affects of seeing the buildings being hit on 9/11, the collapse and watching people die changed his life forever! What became important to him was no longer his career in NYC, but family, friends and finding the fine line between having a life filled with wonderful experiences, and then a career. Peter has been in the service industry and entertainment for more the thirty years, and fashion for twenty years. Peter's philosophy is quite simple and he lives daily by these rules: "Treat people the way you would like to be treated, and try never to do anything that would cause one to live with regret. Do your very best each and every day." Boogaard's was created ten years ago out of adversity, and has become one of the leading bed and breakfast establishments in Amsterdam. "I love to share my life and experiences with all that come to stay" says Peter.

Tomasz (photo on the left)

Born to Polish parents, Tomasz lived and worked in Poland before settling with Peter in Amsterdam in 2003. He studied at the University of Gdansk, received an engineering degree and has been working for the same company for the last fifteen years. The world has changed remarkably since communism fell and he is grateful to live in a country where people are all treated equally. “My home land is beautiful and changing ever so quickly, so if you ever get a chance to visit Poland, I urge you to do so.” Poland has a rich history, and of lots of wonderful traditions. There are mountains( great for winter sports), great beaches in the north and some of the best woodlands in the world. "I love helping Peter with the Bed and Breakfast, when it comes to technical issues like the wireless internet, mobile phones, computers and our website. Peter is an extraordinarily creative person and I enjoy helping him achieve his visions."  Tomasz speaks at least five languages and loves living in the beautiful city of Amsterdam. "We are looking forward to one day retiring back to my home land and the city where I spent my youth."
